Be light made
“And God said: Be light made. And light was made. And God saw the light that it was good; and he divided the light from the darkness.”
Before anything else, He gives light — not because He needs it, but because we will. Press and hold anywhere in the dark to speak light into it.
The waters divided
“And God made a firmament, and divided the waters that were under the firmament, from those that were above the firmament.”
Order out of chaos — a roof of sky raised over the deep. The world is being made safe.
The dry land appears
“God also said: Let the waters… be gathered together into one place: and let the dry land appear… And the earth brought forth the green herb.”
Watch the hills rise and the first green reach upward — a table being set.
Two great lights — and the stars
“And God made two great lights: a greater light to rule the day; and a lesser light to rule the night: and the stars.”
The stars — a hundred billion galaxies — get three words: and the stars. That is what majesty sounds like when it is understated.
The waters teem, the skies fill
“And God created the great whales, and every living and moving creature, which the waters brought forth… and every winged fowl according to its kind.”
And the first words God speaks to any creature are a blessing: increase and multiply.
In His own image
“Let us make man to our image and likeness… And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them.”
Everything before this was good. Only now, with you in the picture, does He say very good (Gen 1:31; CCC §356–357). The whole build was for an inhabitant.
And He rested
“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made: and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. And he blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.”
Notice — the page itself has gone still. Rest is not the absence of the work. It is its crown.
And God saw all the things that he had made
“…and they were very good.”
What this window shows of God’s heart: creation is not a machine He wound up — it is a gift He furnished, light first, table set, made safe, and crowned with someone to love. “The world was made for the glory of God” (CCC §293) — and glory, here, looks like generosity.
